EDITORS NOTE
Making a straightforward, matter-of-fact, serious and high-fidelity book about the work would have been easy. But as much as possible, I wanted to visually do justice to all the different voices that shape it. Images have feelings, and words have feelings, too. Play Something Else Cowboy was a highly individual yet collective experience. It encouraged new ways of thinking and existing, explored creative avenues and never failed to question “the right or usual way” to do things. Much like many of Joe and Chanelle’s works, Play Something Else Cowboy remains elusive to define; it has no centre. I wanted the book to include every detail, as much as possible, so that it would feel like a documentary if a wildly inaccurate one. Not much was edited out. Taken against proper documentation standards, it is rough around the edges and as wobbly as drunken mental sparring. At times, it slurs. It is imperfect. Every conversation has a ghost. It leaves something behind. I hope the following pages help give some of these ghosts a faint outline. In the end, it’s how you remember it that counts. - BV
ABOUT
Play Something Else Cowboy
This book by Bruna Volpi with Jake Terrey catalogues ‘‘Play Something Else Cowboy” a project by Joe and Chanelle that ran for 2 years, 2020 - 2022. At a small cowhide bar, in a dedicated space in Surry Hills, Joe and Chanelle hosted invited artists and a +1 over cocktails. A meeting place for critical reflection, laughter, and care; Play Something Else Cowboy embodied an alternative form of social art practice.
In Volumes 1 - 3, guests at the bar reflect on their experience. Joe and Chanelle talk shop; and images show various iterations, takeovers and sentiments of this bar come institution.
From Notes and Quotes at the bar a series of engraved vintage glassware has been catalogued in Volume 4 and 5 of the Book. - JW
